CAPTCHA, or Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart, is a response test used to distinguish between human and computer users. The test includes a series of letters and numbers that are partially distorted or modified. The user is prompted to copy the series of characters in another text box. The response is then graded based on the user’s ability to distinguish the characters that CAPTCHA has generated. If the user’s response is deemed accurate, they are permitted to continue to the next page. CAPTCHA offers spam protection, accurate user statistics, and accessibility.
CAPTCHA Verification creates an additional layer of security from potential “bot” spammers in order to block spammers from posting unauthorized information or collecting private customer information. Because most CAPTCHAs are too complex or difficult for a computer to read, this feature provides an added level of customer protection.
Accurate User Statistics
CAPTCHA Verification can prevent bot spammers from creating fake accounts and ultimately misrepresenting the number of active account holders on a site.
Because CAPTCHA Verification is meant to be used by people, it is important for these tests to be user friendly. CAPTCHAs can be customized to allow users to request a new test if needed. While CAPTCHAs are typically visual tests that rely on the user’s ability to read characters, they can also be administered as an audio test.
The use of CAPTCHA verification on forms is now standard in Magento Enterprise. Learn more about integrations within Magento (links to integrations page as requested).
