Challenge

Viking Pump has a more than 100 year history as the leader in the manufacture and distribution of industrial pump applications to manage the movement of virtually any liquids, from water to chocolate. A subsidiary of IDEX Corporation, Viking Pump manages over 245 authorized distributors in 68 countries. Viking pump connected with us to create a fluid commerce solution that could simplify and streamline a complex ordering process, leverage back-office data to empower their distributor network, and ultimately drive sales growth through the deployment of a self-service commerce tool.

Approach

Given the inherent complexities involved in the configuration and ordering process, our focus in defining and building the ecommerce solution was on the user experience and leveraging product, customer, and order data from their ERP system of record. This resulted in an access-restricted commerce portal built on the hybris framework.

Although the site’s users were experienced within the industry, the intricacies involved in ordering and reordering products, accessories, and replacement parts were many. So, we architected the interface around user workflows tied to product configuration, adding product-specific accessories, and purchasing value-added services. Account hierarchies were implemented to narrow down a base of 180,000 SKUs to present unique product catalogs to individual customers, such as OEMs. A document repository and application experience database were also tied into the system, allowing distributors to easily query and access service manuals, technical diagrams, and optimized product settings.

To present accurate data to distributors, including pricing, lead time, documentation, and stock availability, we integrated hybris with Viking’s JD Edwards ERP system to enable real-time data calls. With a lack of existing documentation on-hand, our technology team essentially reverse-engineered the integration to the ERP to create the necessary data hooks. To ensure knowledge share going forward and to prepare the Viking team to support the B2B ecommerce portal post-launch, we employed a co-development model, working hand-in-hand during development of the solution.

Outcome

With the launch of their new distributor portal, Viking Pump has introduced new cost and time-saving efficiencies for both business users and their global distributor network, and user feedback has been extraordinary. We continue to work with IDEX on opportunities related to additional business units.
